October 18, 2006Iowa State University's Tasty Insect RecipesWell, it has been said that going to college will make it possible for a person to get the education that will help them pursue their career. It has also been said that a college education will impart wisdom, maturity, and an understanding for the true meaning of life. If today's Warped site is any indication, a college education has sure changed a lot since I attended. The name of the site is the Iowa State University's Tasty Insect Recipes. Now, before being repulsed or grossed out, the site isn't all that bad. As any viewer of the Survivor tv series knows, any insect can be eaten if one is hungry enough. But this site, sponsored by the Entomology Department takes it a little further, and shows how to prepare the little buggers. For example, there are recipes for banana worm bread, mealworm fried rice, chocolate covered grasshoppers, and corn borer cornbread muffins. There is a section on the nutritional value of bugs, and where you can buy them, saving you the time of having to hunt them down yourself. They have even been featured on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Of course, the department has a disclaimer that you eat at your own risk, and they are not responsible for any gastric discomfort, allergic reactions, yada, yada, yada. The Warp-o-Meter gives this site a rating of 8.5. I guess he remember the immortal words from Survivor 1 participant Richard Hatch that "grubs is grubs". At least he thinks it was Richard.
